For the second year in a row, Bowdoin College in Brunswick has been judged to have the "Best Campus Food" in the US by The Princeton Review. Other Maine colleges fared almost as well, with Colby College in Waterville ranked 8th on the list, the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor 18th, and Bates College in Lewiston in the 20 spot. What is their secret? An increasing amount of fresh Maine grown food, of course. "It's going back to the basics," said Ken Cardone, associate director of dining services at Bowdoin. "Fresh is better than canned or frozen, and if you can get it in your backyard and you can prepare it as soon as it's harvested, you're better off."
This November, Colby College in Waterville has committed to featuring Maine foods for their Thanksgiving meal. Below is the press release:

Instead of turning up their noses at dining hall fare, college students now often demand to be fed meals made from locally grown produce. As a result, organizations -- like Maine's Farm Fresh Connection -- help source and supply local institutions with meat, milk, and mashed potatoes grown just down the road from their dormitories.
Brown University has recently discovered the joy of eating closer to home, led by 2004 graduate Louella Hill, who wrote her senior thesis on "Localizing the Foodshed." Her goal is no less than the survival of Rhode Island's few remaining farms.

Colleges and universities around the country are learning that local food tastes better, so that they can improve the food they offer students at the same time that they can help support their local communities.
An AP news story written by Jeannette J. Lee (and expanded on with the Maine perspective in the Waterville Morning Sentinel) reports:
"This is the time to show students healthy choices so they can develop food habits that are good and long-lasting," said Jennifer Wilkins, Director of Cornell University's Farm to School Program.
In southern Maine, Farm Fresh Connection helps colleges and other institutions that offer food services source more of their menus locally.
